Phil Mickelson Angry Over Golf Wager

Most people that follow golf on the PGA Tour know that Phil Mickelson enjoys wagering.  Lefty enjoys betting with fellow competitors, and has been known to rub his winnings in the faces of his colleagues, like the time he made copies of the $100 bills he took from Tiger. However, Mickelson doesn’t seem to enjoy the fact that a newcomer on the tour took some money off him just a few weeks ago.

 

“We get on the first tee, it’s pretty early in the morning and he says, ‘I don’t wake up this early to play for any less than $2,500’,” Ruffels recalled of a friendly offer made to him by Mickelson. The 42-time US PGA Tour winner gave Ruffels 2-1 odds; if Ruffels won, Mickelson would give him $5,000, if he lost, Ruffels would have to pay up $2,500 when he turned professional.

“I was a few down through nine but then I birdied six of my last seven to win by one shot and took his money, so that was pretty cool,” Ruffels said with a laugh.

Oh, and because Ruffels was also playing with Phil’s brother, Tim Mickelson, who is the head golf coach at Arizona State, there were conspiracy theories that this was some giveaway to the 17-year-old that the NCAA might have an interest investigating.

As soon as the story went viral, young Ruffels and his management team started to backtrack — saying he had already turned pro (or planned to turn pro), the amount was greatly exaggerated, and that the story contained plenty of inaccuracies. “The ‘friendly wager’ and the birdie barrages’ reporting is a bit overdone.”

The story was already out before Mickelson made his 2016 debut last week in Palm Springs. It did not come up then, but with the return to Torrey Pines, site of the wager, and with Ruffels making his pro debut this week, Mickelson decided to address it on Wednesday. Accelerate Through Your Putts

It is pretty common for the pros to knock down 3 to 5 footers all day long.  For the average golfer, these putts can cause us quite a bit of anxiety and frustration.  We all know that the more putts we make within 5 feet, the lower our scores are going to be.  Here is some quick advice on draining more of these putts, and taking a little bit of cash from your opponents this year.

The first thing you really need to understand is that the more hesitant you are with your stroke, the more likely you are to bring more break into play.  When we tap the ball slowly at the hole, every bit of break comes into play.  You may look at the putt and say this is a straight putt, but if the ball is dying towards the hole, the chances are you are going to have quite a bit of movement right around the hole.  The key is acceleration of the putter head, not deceleration.

Many players from beginners to the pros decelerate or stop the putter at the ball on these putts.  If you decelerate, you will often come up short which gives you zero chance of holing it.  What is the saying…..Never up never in?  Yeah, it is 100% accurate.

How To Make More Short Putts

Pick the line you want the ball to travel, knowing that you are rolling the ball all the way to the hole. The hole is simply going to get in the way of the ball and drop.

Take a short backstroke and let the putter go through the ball so that it keeps moving after contact.  You want to feel that you are “rolling” the ball forward.  Most of the time when we miss these short putts we look more like we are hitting a hammer with a nail, and stopping at impact.  Think short back stroke, and longer follow through.

putting through the ballIt is also recommended that you keep your head down through the ball.  I have friends that actually still have their head downs as the ball drops in the hole.  This is a bit of an over-exaggeration, but this will absolutely keep you from lifting your head at impact and throwing the ball a bit off of line.

Finally, practice these putts most often on the putting green prior to your round.  You are going to have plenty of 3 to 5 footers, so feeling confident about draining each one is going to carry on to the golf course.

Sometimes after a period of rain, the sand in the bunkers may become hard, so that is it difficult to slide your sand wedge under the ball, as you normally do.  If you try a standard bunker shot, the sole of the wedge will bounce into the ball and send it flying over the green.  The best way to handle this type of sand is to use a pitching wedge and square up the face so that the club will not bounce off of the sand.  Play the ball back a little in your stance and chip the ball out by striking it first and then let the club enter the sand in front of where the ball was.  The ball will come out but might not have much spin, so allow for that extra distance.  Although you may have a long putt, it is better than being over the green and pitching or chipping back at the hole.
